The Vetiver System is based on the use of a very special tropical grass, Vetiver grass (Chrysopogon Ziznioides).  Vetiver grass, which is being promoted in almost 100 countries world wide, is originally from Southern India, is sterile, non-invasive and needs to be propagated by sub-division.  During application the planting slips, which are usually 3 tillers each, and are planted 15cm apart on the contour of the slope, which when mature creates a hedge row of stiff grass that serves as a buffer and spreader of downward water flow, as well as a sediment trap. 

A good hedge row can reduce rainfall runoff up to 70% and sediment runoff up to 90%.  Vetiver grass's finely structured root system can achieve root depths uo to 3-4 meters in the first year under certain applications.  It is also highly resistant to pests, disease, fire and drought.
